One day last week, I went to visit my family’s new home. Yep, my mother finally purchased the home of her dreams! I’m super excited for her and pray that she makes herself feel at home. In a home that’s actually hers! It’s absolutely beautiful and very suitable for her and my 3 siblings living with her.
While there, my mother helped me run errands with Social Security. After that, I cooked spaghetti for dinner and walked the dogs. We have 2 beagles. One is 17, the other is 5. After dinner, we went to the mall. It was a very nice visit. However, during my time there, I noticed something that I never thought would be possible.
I realized that I outgrew the home. I didn’t feel homesick. That “I’m an adult” persona hovered over me. Yes spending time there was amazing, but I realize that there’s so many advantages to gaining your own independence.
- Paying your own bills
- Better chances at love
- Self advocacy
- Making your own decisions
I am beyond grateful to my family for everything they have done for me in my 32 years of life. I am here whenever they need me. If it wasn’t for them, I would not be the woman I am today. This blog wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them. As I move forward with my journey, I will remember everything they have taught me about reaching for the stars.
A butterfly has developed within me and I must fly like one. Yes, being an autistic adult in the real world is scary, but not taking a chance on independence is scarier.
I can tell you one thing; THIS FIGHT FOR INDEPENDENCE IS WORTH THE FIGHT. Whatever comes my way, I’m ready to fight it like a rockstar!!!!
